Kundalini Yoga Classes Near You: A 7-Point Checklist to Find a Genuine Kundallini Yoga Teacher

Kundalini Yoga Classes Near You: How to Find a Genuine Teacher in Goa, India and Online
To find a good kundalini yoga class near you, search Google Maps for "kundalini yoga" plus your area, shortlist teachers who state their lineage and training, and take one trial class before paying for a package. Check seven things: lineage, training, class structure, safety screening, pace, class size and pricing transparency. If nothing nearby meets the standard, a live online class with a trained teacher is a safe alternative.
Typing "kundalini yoga near me" gets you a long list of studios and very little help in telling them apart. Kundalini yoga is a powerful practice with breath, sound and energy work, so who teaches it and how matters more than how close the studio is.
This guide tells you what a class involves, how to judge a teacher in about ten minutes, and what your options are in Goa, elsewhere in India and online. For the bigger picture of the practice, see our complete guide to Kundalini Yoga.
What happens in a kundalini yoga class?
Formats differ between lineages. Here are the two you are most likely to meet in India.

| Element | Yogi Bhajan / 3HO-style class | Sivananda–Satyananda-style Kundalini Kriya class |
|---|---|---|
| Opening | A tuning-in mantra, often chanted three times | Om chanting or a short prayer |
| Warm-up | Spinal flexes, stretches, twists | Joint and spine loosening, gentle asana |
| Main practice | A kriya set: held postures and movements with breath of fire and other breathwork | Asana, pranayama, bandhas and mudras, and kriya practice |
| Relaxation | Deep relaxation, often with music or a gong | Deep relaxation, sometimes yoga nidra |
| Meditation | A timed mantra or breath meditation | Meditation on breath, mantra or awareness |
| Close | A closing mantra and song | A closing prayer and Om |
These are typical patterns, not rules. What matters is that a class has a clear structure and ends with relaxation and meditation, not only intense breathing. If you're unsure which style you're looking at — Yogi Bhajan's system, the classical Sivananda–Satyananda approach, or a modern studio blend — our guide to the three meanings of Kundalini Yoga breaks down the differences. Types of kundalini yoga classes
| Format | Best for | Commitment | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drop-in studio class | Trying it out | Low | Teacher may not know your health history |
| Weekly course or series | Building a habit | Medium | Check the teacher's training before prepaying |
| Workshop or immersion | A deeper taste | Low to medium | Intensity can be too high for beginners |
| Live online class | No local teacher, flexible schedule | Low to medium | Needs a teacher who sees you and gives feedback |
| Residential retreat | A full reset | High | Choose a lineage-based programme with screening |

A 7-point checklist for a genuine kundalini yoga class

- Lineage is stated.A good teacher can tell you who taught them and which tradition they teach in.
- Training is specific.Look for registered credentials such as Yoga Alliance (RYT 200 or 500, or ERYT) or, in India, certification through the Yoga Certification Board under the Ministry of AYUSH. Registration shows training hours, not teaching quality, so also ask about kundalini-specific training.
- The class has a structure.Warm-up, main practice, relaxation and meditation. Be cautious if the whole class is breath of fire.
- There is safety screening. The teacher asks about pregnancy, blood pressure, epilepsy, mental health and injuries, and offers modifications.
- The pace suits beginners. You are allowed to rest, sit out a round or stop.
- Class size allows attention. The teacher can see you and correct you.
- The business is transparent.Clear prices, no pressure to buy packages and no guarantees of awakening or cures.
Questions to ask before you book
- Which lineage or style do you teach?
- What training do you have in kundalini yoga, and for how many years have you taught it?
- Is there a trial class or single-session price?
- How do you handle beginners and people with health conditions?
- What does a typical class include, and how long is it?
- Do you offer modifications if I can't do breath of fire?
What to wear and bring
Clothing
Comfortable and loose. White clothing and a head covering are customary in some traditions, especially in Yogi Bhajan–style classes, but they are optional for beginners.
Food
A light stomach. Eat two to three hours before class.
Bring
Water, a mat, a blanket or shawl for relaxation and a notebook if you like to jot down impressions.
Arrive
Ten minutes early so you can tell the teacher about any health conditions.
What your first class should feel like
Expect to feel warm, a little tingly and calmer afterwards. Some people feel emotional. Breath of fire can cause lightheadedness the first few times, so slow down or pause if that happens.
Dizziness that lasts hours, strong anxiety or feeling unable to settle. If that happens, tell the teacher and take a break from the intense techniques.

Kundalini yoga in Goa
Goa is full of yoga, but depth is harder to find than a drop-in flow class. If you are searching in North Goa, apply the checklist above, ask about lineage, and be wary of any class that promises a quick awakening.
At Vishuddhi Issha Yoga & Ayurveda in Candolim, we teach residential programmes in Goa from January to March and teach online for the rest of the year. Our teaching follows the Sivananda–Satyananda lineage of Kundalini Kriya Yoga, with a gradual progression from foundations to deeper practices.

No class nearby? Learn kundalini yoga online
A live online class is a legitimate option when there is no good teacher within reach, and it is often a better choice than a nearby class that does not meet the checklist. Look for:
- Live, not only recorded: you can ask questions and get feedback.
- Small groups with cameras on: the teacher can see your technique.
- Health screening: the same questions you would expect in person.
- Progression: a structured course, not random one-off videos.
Our online Kundalini Kriya Yoga course is designed this way, and you can browse the full range on the online yoga courses page.
Red flags when choosing a kundalini yoga class
- Promises of guaranteed awakening, healing or "cures"
- No information about the teacher's training or lineage
- Pressure to pay for a large package before a trial
- Sixty minutes of intense breathwork with no relaxation
- No health questions and no modifications offered
- Advice to stop medication or avoid medical care
Frequently asked questions
Is kundalini yoga good for beginners?
Yes, when taught at a beginner pace by a trained teacher. Good beginner classes include a clear warm-up, simple kriyas, short breath of fire rounds, relaxation and meditation, and let you modify or rest at any time.
How much does a kundalini yoga class cost?
Prices vary by city and format. Drop-in classes cost the most per session; series and courses usually cost less per class but need commitment. Ask for single-class and series prices, and try one class before buying a package.
Do I have to wear white for kundalini yoga?
No. White clothing and a head covering are customary in some traditions, especially Yogi Bhajan–style classes, but they are optional for beginners. Comfortable, loose clothing is enough.
How often should I attend a kundalini yoga class?
One or two classes a week is a good start for beginners, plus short home practice between classes. Build up gradually, and include rest days.
Can I learn kundalini yoga online?
Yes. A live online class with a trained teacher, small groups, camera feedback and health screening can work well, especially if there is no good teacher nearby.
How do I know a kundalini yoga teacher is qualified?
Ask about lineage, kundalini-specific training and years of teaching, and look for recognised credentials such as Yoga Alliance registration or certification under the Ministry of AYUSH's Yoga Certification Board. A good teacher also screens students for health conditions.
What is the difference between a kundalini and a hatha yoga class?
Hatha classes usually focus on postures, stretching and breath. Kundalini classes combine postures with breathwork (such as breath of fire), mantra, bandhas and meditation in set sequences called kriyas, often aimed at energy and the nervous system.
